Prospective dates for this event will be held either Saturday December 4 or Saturday December 11.

Winter Session 2 has officially started! The past few months have been harsh since our recital in December but we are glad that familiar faces from the past braved the cold to be with our Ohana! Tuesday, 3/2/10, will close Winter Session 2 registration for Hula - that means you are not too late to join us next week! Tahitian with Joy begins tomorrow, Thursday 2/25/10 - so don’t forget to bring a bottle of water and a towel because she will surely get you to do some hip shaking faa'rapus to hot Polynesian beats!

To give you a glimpse of what you're missing, our lovely instructor Wendy is teaching us a new Kahiko about Pele, the Goddess of Fire. We are moving quite along – in fact we are already halfway done w/ the song (Wendy does not waste anytime) ! We appreciate how she takes time to translate and provide the lyrics - which makes a huge difference in our learning. We are also grateful for the drills and warm ups in the beginning of each class – her style is very consistent and flowing ! Can’t wait for more! So let’s continue to keep the Polynesian culture alive and spread the Aloha Spirit across the Chicagoland Area. Mahalo!

Biography – Wendy

Wendy was born and raised in Hawaii and has been dancing hula for over 25 years. She recently relocated to the Chicago area in August 2009. Wendy started dancing hula at the age of 5 with Halau Hula Olana, lead by Olana Ai. Her young hula career includes highlights such as winning Keiki Hula Competitions, entertaining for hotels and cruise ships in Waikiki, performing for the United Nations and President George Bush, and traveling around the world to dance the hula and share the Hawaiian culture.

Wendy attended Punahou School and assumed the very exclusive role of Holoku Pageant director. The Holoku Pageant is the only student run Hula and Polynesian dance recital of its kind in the State. She choreographed hula dances, designed costumes, organized music, and led the production.

While attending Cornell University, Wendy revived the Cornell Hawaii Club and was able to lead the production of an authentic Hawaiian luau in Ithaca, New York, that included traditional Hawaiian food, hula and other Polynesian dances. The Hawaiian luau became so popular that by the second year, they offered two different show times and both shows were sold out with a total of 400 people.

Wendy has taught hula in many different areas and enjoys sharing the Hawaiian culture especially when she’s so far from home. She welcomes students of all levels of experience to join her and feel the Aloha as they dance the hula.

Aloha Ohana...

It's been over a month since we held Ohana Enterainment's First Audition and we are proud to say that we had a "hu'ihu'i" (cool/awesome) time....

Picture a perfect September day in the village of Wicker Park. The sky is blue and the temperature is cool, but as you enter Ohana's Studio, heat rises like flames of fire. Imagine the excitement, nervousness, and rush the lovely wahines have as they make their way to the 2nd floor to make the cut as part the next Ohana Polynesian Dancer....

The wahines were unaware of what to expect but once the the toere drums starts beating; the hips starts shakin, and boy oh "boe" it was 'on' ! Each and every single one of them holds true talent and beauty to the Polynesian culture. They all danced hard to impress the judges; and may we say it all paid off because we could not pick just one new member but we had to pick them ALL! Ho'omaika'i (Congratulations) to the next generation of Ohana Entertainment.

Let's Bake a Luau Cake...

In the mood to bake? We were..

Serve this Hawaiian Luau Cake and give everyone a lei to wear while eating it. Talk about this beautiful state while enjoying dessert.

HAWAIIAN LUSCIOUS LUAU CAKE

1 box yellow cake mix
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 can (16-oz) mandarin oranges, drained
4 eggs
1 carton (16-oz) frozen whipped topping, thawed
1 can (16-oz) crushed pineapple, drained
1 large box instant vanilla pudding mix

In a large bowl, mix together the cake mix, vegetable oil, oranges, and eggs. Pour into the prepared cake pans and bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Cool in pans until cakes will come out easily. Place 1 layer on the serving plate and one on a wire rack.

Mix the whipped topping, pineapple, and pudding mix together. If too thick to spread, add a small amount of the pineapple juice at a time until it reaches spreading consistency. Spread over top of cake layer on the serving plate. Top with the second layer. Spread remaining mixture over the top and sides of the cake.

hapa hale is the low down on where to find all things modern & fresh from the islands of hawai'i. it all started out of my own frustration trying to locate well designed finds that have a more modern aesthetic &/or honor the old ways of the islands.

living on the mainland makes it even more difficult to bring a modern island style to my home away from home. it truly seemed to be a task of futility since the only way to find such elusive goodness required endless slogging through vacation rental listings and lots of things which are simply not my thing. if you have ever googled "hawaii" + "[fill in the blank]" you know my pain.

so my one and only new year's resolution was to create a blog to feature all the lovely things kama'aina are making, be they in hawai'i or off in the great world, as well as anything else island inspired that catches my fancy.

when i find them, good travel deals (filed under jet set) and off the beaten path things to do in hawai'i (filed under adventure and wish you were here) will also be posted because i am always on the hunt for something different to do when i go home (and i firmly believe that more locals should explore all the wonder that awaits them in their backyard).

Traditionally in Hawaii, Leis are an accessory to be worn at special events such as weddings, luaus, picnics, or even the first or last day on the job.

As part of Ohana Entertainment and Friends, let's start a tradition right here in our own wonderful city of Chicago!

Enjoy this simple instruction on how to create a lei for that special person.

Step 1
Lay a 36-inch long piece of grosgrain ribbon flat on a work table. Lay the fake flowers to be used on the ribbon in a random fashion. Ensure same color flowers are not side by side, but separated with a contrasting color flower. For example, alternate light flowers with dark flowers so that the colors of each blossom stand out. Lay flowers side by side, but not too close together. Continue doing this from one end of the ribbon to the other, leaving a 1/2-inch space at each end.

Step 2
Start at one end of the ribbon. Pick up a flower and, with a hot glue gun, put a dab of hot glue on the inside center of each blossom (wrong side) and press it down onto the grosgrain ribbon where it had been positioned.

Step 3
Glue the next flower. Continue until all the flowers are secured to the grosgrain ribbon. Let the lei cool.

Step 4
Add a dab of hot glue to one of the ribbon ends and lay the other end of the ribbon on top of it to secure closure. Press together and let cool.

Step 5
Make as many leis as may be needed for the event where they will be used. Hand out to guests to wear as they arrive, to create a festive atmosphere. If there are many leis, more than one lei can be given to each guest to wear.

Luau Ham and Glazed Pineapple Snacks

These delicious skewers of ham and marmalade-glazed fruit are perfect for your luau party. Easy to make and looks great with a decorated toothpick (silk flowers or Luau Umbrella Parasol Picks ). Just poke them into a pineapple and this snack can double as a centerpiece and be eaten too! (Makes about 36 servings). Recipe:

1 can of 15 1/4 ounce of pineapple chunks
1/4 cup orange marmalade
6 ounces thinly sliced cooked ham, cut into 4×1/2 inch strips
Wooden toothpicks that have decorated ends like flowers or umbrellas, or other festive theme
1 jar of 10 ounce maraschino cherries

Instructions:

In a medium bowl, toss the pineapple chunks (drained) in the orange marmalade and coat.
Thread a cherry (drained) through a toothpick or skewer.
Wrap a ham string around each pineapple chunk.
Then thread each wrapped pineapple on the toothpick.
Take a pineapple to use as a base. If the pineapple is unsteady, you may need to cut 1/4 of the bottom off to create a stable base.
Place pineapple onto a festive plate. Poke all skewers into the pineapple.
Cover and chill for up to 2 hours. Served chilled.
Another option: If you prefer to serve this as a warm snack, warm the skewers instead of chilling them in the oven on 325 degrees for about 30 minutes and serve immediately.

How to Do Hula Dancing for Fitness

Hula dancing is believed to have been done for over a thousand years. Tradition hula dancing was part of Hawaiian ceremonies where the dancers told a story through their movements. Styles of hula dancing include traditional and modern, and hula is often performed as entertainment in Polynesian shows and luaus. Learning the graceful movements of hula dancing is also a great fitness regimen which provides cardiovascular benefits and helps tone hips and abdominals.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Step1

Take a hula lesson. You don't have to be on a Hawaiian island to find hula lessons. There are community classes, dance studios and fitness centers which teach hula dancing for fitness. Consider buying an instructional DVD on hula dancing. Many DVDs incorporate aerobic moves into the hula dancing to make the workout more difficult.

Step2

Learn some basic hula dance moves. Hula dancing is made of several basic moves, and it's important to learn the basics before moving on to combinations. Learn the names and how to perform the kaholo, hele, kao, uwehe and lele to start.

Step3

Move the hips. Hula dancing involves swaying the hips in combination with arm motions and footwork. It may seem difficult at first to coordinate all movements at the same time, but with practice it can be accomplished.

Step4

Use traditional Hawaii music. Listening to music of the islands will help you develop the rhythms of the movements. Practice keeping pace with the music.

Step5

Increase the intensity. Increase the speed of the movements. Create routines to prevent boredom. Put different combinations of dance moves together. You do not have to do every move perfect. The goal is to get a good workout from your hula dancing.

Step6

Have fun. Workouts should not be a chore, and hula dancing for fitness is a fun way to get in shape. Put on a traditional hula dancer outfit. Wear a lei and a grass skirt. Dance for 20 to 30 minutes several times a week to gain fitness benefits.
